Gaz

A trained graphic designer and illustrator, Gaz’s career changed when he joined a small design agency in London after leaving Harrow art college and worked as assistant on advertising shoots for the drinks and spirit industry. He found he loved painting with light and creating studio sets for the products, transforming the studio in Kentish Town into exotic locations such as a South American bar for Havana Club rum, a French chateaux for Chateau de Ligneres cognac or a highland croft cottage for Dewar’s whisky. Soon he was designing and shooting the promotion, pack shots and POS himself for Guinness, Johnny Walker, Bells Whisky and many other brands. Becoming an art director for the gift trade used more of his skills in designing, illustrating and photography for product packaging, gift books and games aimed at gift shops and high street chains such as Debenhams, C&A and BHS.

His photographs of fitness, fashion models and actors started to feature on magazine covers after successful solo exhibitions in London and have since appeared world wide in books, calendars, online and on TV. His work is noted for many covers and editorials for QX and Boyz magazines, as well as Attitude, OK! (USA edition), Pref (France), Mmensuel (France), Evening Standard, DNA (Australia), Recon, Pink TV (France) and Granada TV and book publishers Bruno Gmunder. His work drew the attention of artist Don Bachardy, who asked Gaz to sit for him at the house he shared with Christopher Isherwood in Santa Monica, and who then sat for Gaz in return on a visit to London in 2010.

Gaz largely works now as a theatre production photographer, and has been in house photographer for the Above the Stag Theatre (UK’s only LGBTQ+ theatre) for over 8 years. He has shot many productions for award winning writers, including BAFTA winners Glenn Chandler and Jonathan Harvey, and shot the recent production of Closer to Heaven (music by the Pet Shop Boys).

In 2014 Gaz joined the charity Make a Difference Trust and became their in house photographer on the fund raising productions, including West End Bare, A West End Christmas, West End Eurovision and MAD drag as well as cabarets and events. Working with the west end casts of many shows including Les Misérables, Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia and Wicked to name just a few. He also shot on many of the calendars for West End Bares becoming art director and head photographer for the 10th Anniversary edition.

His images have been instrumental in the success of many campaigns including those for the charities The Terrence Higgins Trust (UK GOV safe sex campaigns), Diversity Role Models and #Cheerupcharlie.
